Now that the podcast has been successfully ongoing for several weeks, I would like to get your opinion on the way that the podcast is set up for viewing. I'm not looking so much for feedback on what is in them or how the information is presented in each episode. I think the comments I have received on the individual podcasts have done a good job of providing feedback on the episodes themselves. Instead, I'm looking for feedback on the website arrangement. Do you like having the blog and podcast on separate pages or would you rather see each podcast episode embeded into the blog post like I have done here using the trailer?

I can see benefits of presenting the videos both ways. When embeded into the blog, the blog text that is posted and the comments on the podcast are all in the same place. However, with the podcast on its own page, it is easier to go back to previous episodes since the episode list is right there on the right of the video window. Of course you could always use the little icons at the bottom of the video window to view previous episodes as well when they are embeded into the blog post, this just isn't as obvious as having an episode list right there.

So please let me know what you the viewers think by leaving a comment. How do you prefer to see future podcasts presented?

Any other feedback is always welcome as well. Just leave a comment.

As always, thanks for your continued support!

All posts should be in one single place. A separate page with links to the videos is a good idea, but generally those of us who use a newsreader would like everything in one place. It makes for a better blog.

I love the podcast. In fact, it's become one of my favorite. I'd love to see an itunes link as I use itunes to view all the rest of my podcasts.
As to whether they are on the same page as the blog, it doesn't matter. I use an RSS reader and can get both.
Keep up the great work.

Thanks Wizer, you make a good point for the newsreaders. Definitely something to consider.

Glenn, Thanks & glad to be one of your favorites! You actually can subscribe through itunes in two ways. One is to just click on the Subscribe Via Itunes link above the video window on the Podcast page (for now). The other is to click the little pie shaped icon at the bottom of the video window (between the book and full screen icons) and click the subscription tab in the window that pops up. There you will have the option to subscribe through itunes.

I using itunes for the podcast. I read your blog too (in google reader), and it's nice to see reminders in the blog that the latest podcast issue is out. I wouldn't mind if the podcast episode was also embedded in the blog, although I'd probably switch to itunes to watch it, rather than view it in my web browser. I think the main advantage of embedding in the blog is for posterity, it'll be a bit easier for people to stumble across single episodes when googling for that info, providing the blog article also includes some text describing the episode. I think that'd be valuable to a lot of people.

I don't have problem viewing either way. I wish the sound could have less echo as sometimes it is hard to understand the audio. THe content is great, and I look forward to new posts. Keep up the good work.

I've been getting the podcasts through iTunes and like that. I read the blog through Google Reader. I'm really enjoying both.

At the very least, I think that a direct link from the blog post to the podcast would be great. I don't remember off the top of my head if you've done this or not, but I seem to remember it not being the case.

I think it's cool that you're asking for feedback. Kudos.

I think that embedding it would be a good thing. As it is I need to go and look for the podcast when the blog entry pops up. The only possible drawback that I can think of is that it might make the blog entry larger and therefore take longer to load, but I don't think that would be an issue.

So, one vote, here, for embedding.

Oh yeah... one other point. You can still have a podcast page with links to the podcasts so that those who want to revisit old ones can do so without anguish.
By the way... the embed that you used for this example doesn't work properly on my machine... the video isn't centered in the 'frame' so the right hand side of it is cut off. I use Firefox for browsing, which usually works very well, but...

Thanks for all of the feedback everyone. Seems that pretty much everyone agrees that having the podcast embedded in the blog post is preferred so that is how they will be from here on out. I'll probably get around to fixing the previous episodes this way as well and change the Podcast page to be a Podacst Archive page with simple links to the individual podcasts as Mike suggested. I think this provides everyone with the best of both worlds.

Oh, and Mike, I changed the size of the embedded video slightly so let me know if you are still having the problem viewing with Firefox, not that I really would know how to fix that though. If anyone else is having the same problem (or different) viewing the trailer above please let me know.

Thanks folks!

I think the podcast is great. I have enjoyed each episode. Is there any way to download the episodes? With the set up I have it is inconvenient to watch on the computer, so if it is something that I will watch several times (such as your podcast) I like to burn a dvd and wwatch on the TV.

Thanks for the great blog and podcast. It is an amazing resource.

Randy,
You can download each episode individually in a few ways. The first, and easiest way is to subscribe through iTunes. This will require you to download iTunes software but it will automatically download any new episodes for you as long as you have the application open and are connected to the net.

The second way is to click on the little book icon at the bottom of the video. In the small window that pops up, click on "READ MORE ABOUT THIS POST ON BLIP.TV". This will take you to a page that will allow you to download the episode.

Hope this helps!

Hello Bob,

I am a little late to jump in here, but I just recently discovered the podcast via iTunes. I love it! The more galoots, the merrier!
I wouldn't change a thing as far as content and pace. You're hitting it on the head and are a welcome addition to the podcasting world.
I look forward to more posts and podcasts. Keep up the excellent work!

Bob

I have only recently discovered your blog and pods and they are great. I have just read/watched them from start to finish.
No fuss, no glitz, just good old fashioned skill and opinion - very well considered and expressed.

I love your work - please keep them coming.

Hi Bob,
Thank you so much for the podcast I love it. Please keep them coming!

Here are things I like:
Real use of hand tools

Great explanation

Clear Camera and Lighting

Your Family focus (nice to see/hear the dogs, know you have kids, etc)

Small shop, which I can better relate to.

Things I would change:
Better mic, the sound quality isn't bad, but its not great.

Shorter Intro, one minute is too long, I think 15 second would be better.

Overall your podcast is great and fills a great void in the woodworking community.

Thanks again,
-James

Thanks Pete! I'm glad you are enjoying it!

Thanks for the kind word Claire! No to worry, I'll keep doing them as long as there is interest.

James,
Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I feel your pain with the mic. Up to this point, all of the podcast video has been shot using the video function of our still camera, which has only a very bad onboard mic and no way to plug in an aux. mic. However, we just recently purchased a video camera and this one has an aux. mic. input so expect some improvement in audio and video (widescreen :)) in the near future (as soon as I can upgrade my editing software to handle the file format from the new camera).

All the Best,
Bob
